Suncoast Wins First District Title Since 2019

Suncoast Wins First District Title Since 2019.
For some of the core veterans on the Suncoast Chargers roster, this was a moment a long time coming. Playing in their third district title game in the past four seasons on Wednesday, the Chargers seized their moment with one of their best performances of the season to earn a 3-1 win over Jensen Beach. Suncoast won its third district championship in program history, and its first since the 2019 season.
“It was a great game, and I’m really proud of the boys,” Chargers Manager Jimmy Beno said. “It is how you want a championship game to be won. We had great pitching from Jason (Giamboi) and Brady (Benevides), timely hitting, and defensively we played well and made the plays we needed to.”
The Chargers struck right away with their first swings to grab a lead they never surrendered. Lee Ellis singled and then scored on an RBI single from John Cimballa in the first, and Drew Campbell made it a 2-0 advantage with an RBI single that plated Brady Benevides in the second.
That was enough run support for the starter, Jason Giamboi. The senior right-hander earned the win by holding the Falcons to one earned run on three hits and two walks in four innings, and he struck out seven. Benevides then secured the victory with three scoreless relief innings, allowing three hits and a walk with a pair of strikeouts.
Cimbella supplied another insurance run in the sixth, coming home thanks to an RBI single from Hanley Case.
“It has been a long year with a lot of adversity, but I’m proud of the fight and proud we came out on top,” Beno said. “Hats off to Jensen Beach as well, they are well-coached and a great team.”
