Cavo-Wilhoit Combine On One-Hitter; St. John Paul Rolls 14-0
Connor Cavo and Jack Wilhoit combined on a one-hitter and seven different players scored runs in St. John Paul’s 14-0 win at the Benjamin Buccaneers on Wednesday in a reginal quarterfinals playoff game.
St. John Paul advances in the playoffs to a Saturday date at Cardinal Newman.
Eagles starter Cavo was nearly perfect in first 4.2 innings, striking out five while allowing no nits and just one walk. He threw 34 strikes in his 57-pitch outing.
“I felt pretty good,” Cavo said of his stellar performance. “My arm felt good. Right from the start of the game, I thought, ‘wow, I feel good today.”
Cavo said he stuck to a flawless game plan. “Me and my coaches talked it over,” he said. “We had a game plan for every single one of the hitters, and I just followed the game plan and it worked out.”
Wilhoit finished up, yielding just one hit while fanning three and walking just one over his 2.1 innings of work.
Seven different Eagles combined for 18 base hits, nine of those for extra bases. Although there were no home runs hit in the game., the Eagles (12-14-1) managed five doubles and four triples.
Two Eagles, catcher Beau Rurey, and first baseman Lincoln Dorland, led the way with four hits each. Dorland singled, doubled and tripled. He finished a homer shy of the cycle. He drove in a team-best five runs and scored another while Rurey crossed the plate three times and drove in two more.
“I felt pretty good (at the plate), trying to see the ball deep in the zone, let it travel, and it worked out,” Dorland said. “I had a lot of great at-bats today.”
Thomas Velardi delivered three hits, two RBIs and scored three runs. Like Dorland, Velardi also singled, doubled, and tripled.
Tommy Ciaccio (3 RBIs, 2 runs) and Alberto Medina (RBI) collected two hits each for the Eagles. Emmanuel Lantigua also joined the hit parade with a double. He, along with Patrick Mazzamaro and Vinny Blair also scored a run apiece.
“Our offense was clicking from top to bottom,” said St. John Paul manager Peter Graffeo. “For us today, we played a complete game; pitching, defense and timely hitting. Connor gave us five strong no-hit innings on the mound.
“We know it is always tough to play Benjamin. Chad (Mills) and his coaching staff do a great job.”
Griffin Miller had the lone hit, a triple, for Benjamin (15-11). Ben Swank and Brandon Owens also reached base with walks.
