West Boca Manager Jerry Albert Wins 400th Game
West Boca has been in some thrilling games so far in 2024, but perhaps none has been more thrilling then the one they played on Tuesday. With Manager Jerry Albert sitting on 399 career wins, the Bulls fell behind early 5-0 to Lyman.
After scoring one run in the fourth, the Bulls put together a furious rally in the bottom of the seventh, scoring four runs, and securing a memorable 6-5 win to secure Albert’s 400th win.
“What a game today,” said Albert. “We didn’t really start out playing so well, we fell behind early, but then there in the seventh, we had some good at-bats, a couple of real nice walks on 3-2 counts, and then Derek came through again with a big hit.”
While Albert likes to keep the focus on his players, he didn’t even know his team knew about his milestone win.
“I didn’t even think anyone knew about the 400th win, because I don’t like to talk about or focus on any of that stuff,” said Albert. “But they had balloons for it, so I guess some people knew. It was just great to see the kids get so excited about the win the way they did.”
The seventh inning comeback started innocently with a Matt Pagan lead-off walk. Tyler Lichtenberger then singled. Alan Hernandez followed with an RBI double. After a Drew Sucoff walk loaded the bases, and infield error allowed the Bulls to tie the game at five.
After an intentional walk, Derek Godfrey singled in Sucoff, sending the Bulls bench into celebration mode.
“It was a good win for us,” said Albert. “It is starting to come together the last few games, the kids are approaching their at-bats they way we teach it, and it is exciting to see how we are progressing as a team. I am looking forward to where we can go from here.”
Where the Bulls will go in the short-term is finishing off their Florida League Invitational tournament, where they will have two more games, before returning home next week to face Broward’s #6 team St. Thomas, and Miami’s #1 Columbus.
“We have some big games coming up, and hopefully we can continue to get better as we head towards the second half of the season,” said Albert.”
