Trinity Christian Falls To Calvary Christian 9-3

The Trinity Christian Eagles attempting to rally in the midst of a 9-3 defeat.

The Calvary Christian Eagles took care of business in Tuesday’s 9-3 victory over the Trinity Christian Warriors.

The entire Eagles lineup contributed, however it was the bottom third of their lineup that a sparkplug for the offense. The last three spots in the Eagles lineup reached base seven times and scored three of the teams nine runs.

“What I told these guys here today, was that everybody did their job,” said Calvary Christian manager Wayne Rosenthal. “Whether they were first in the order, or last in the order. You do your job, and things will happen.”

The Warriors jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on Eagles’ starting pitcher Braden Rosenthal. Rosenthal then settled in nicely. After the first inning, he surrendered just three hits during the rest of his outing. He went 4.2 innings, while allowing no earned runs and striking out seven. And even though the Eagles’ offense soared, Rosenthal stayed even-keeled.

“The mentality stays the same,” Rosenthal stated. “It’s attack the zone, get weak contact, get to two strikes.”

Marcos Mueses (24) standing on third after getting on base for the first of three times.

The Eagles’ dugout seemed deflated after a first inning that was filled with fielding errors and mishaps. And with two outs in the second, momentum appeared to be on the Warriors’ side. However, that changed when seven-hitter Grant Harrison turned on a fastball and sent it over the left field wall. It was his first round-tripper of the season.

“This is something I’ve definitely been working towards in practice,” Harrison commented. “I knew I got it a little, but I still ran out the box.”

For the Warriors, the loss to the Eagles was their fourth in five games. The offense ran rampant on the basepaths in the first inning. However, the Warriors mustered just four base knocks for the rest of the game. They had the makings of a dramatic comeback in the bottom of the seventh inning, but only pushed across one run.

“That’s a positive there at the end of that inning, where we scrapped a few runs,” said Trinity Christian manager Miguel Cuello. “But again, you score two runs in the first inning and you think the game is over against a great team on the other side? Game’s not over.”

Dmitri Dijkhuzen (16) struck out five over four innings and allowed two earned runs.

One of the bright spots for Trinity was the outing Dmitri Dijkhuzen put together. The Calvary lineup made him work, but Dijkhuzen was able to complete four innings of work and strike out five batters. And while seven runs crossed the plate during his stint, only two of them were earned. His manager believes there is room for improvement.

“It was okay,” Cuello observed. “There were situations where he had guys on the ropes, and just couldn’t finish it.”

Trinity is hitting the road on Tuesday for a matchup against Doral Academy (9-2) at 4pm, while Calvary head into a home matchup against St. Thomas Aquinas (6-4) on Thursday.
