Essay:
Imagine you are chowing down on a delicious burger. Your only goal in the present time is to finish the burger and every bite is better than the last. As you are about to finish it, a stranger bumps you and you drop it onto the dirty restaurant floor. Covid-19 set in and like my fellow seniors, I felt like I got hit by a train when I was told that my 14-year baseball career was going to be cut off just like that.
Baseball had been an escape for me for so many years and there had been a place in every day for baseball whether it was practice, game, or fun. Now it was an empty void in my body that couldn’t be filled by anything else. Of course now I am allowed to practice on my own with friends and keep my distance, but what really makes me sad is that I don’t remember the last time I stepped onto that field with my whole team behind me, because I never saw this coming.
Coming into high school I was five foot nothing weighing 85 pounds with little to offer as a baseball player. Travel ball had always been great, but when I stepped on a high school field everything changed. I’d like to think my failure in my first couple of years of high school had to do with my size, more than my work ethic. This was due to the fact that I was at the field every chance I could, whilst still producing minimal results, but still, everybody can work harder.
Finally, by my junior year I was reliable in the field and at the plate and I gave my team something to offer, even though I wasn’t hitting balls 400 feet. After a great season we were left with a very young team, as 12 seniors had graduated. I knew for our team to be successful my senior year I would not only have to be a leader on the field, but also in the dugout and in practice guiding the younger kids.
I would like to think I did a good job for the time I was with them this year. Looking back at the four years I played at South Broward, I never thought I would go from where I was as a freshman to where I ended up this season, leading the team in several offensive categories.
I wouldn’t have been able to get through high school without playing baseball or without a team. To now know that I will not be able to finish the journey I started years ago is upsetting, but spending time with friends and family has helped absorb the blow.
Although I now will no longer have a team, there will always be a special place in me for baseball, no matter where I go in life. And maybe, baseball will give me a second chance. There is no way of knowing, the only thing that I can do now is work for that chance.
