Glades Day Offense Leads The Way To Victory
The Glades Day Gators picked up their first district win of the season thanks to a big offensive day on Thursday afternoon, riding 11 hits to an 11-1 road victory over Boca Raton Christian. The Gators (2-2-1) improved to 1-1 in 2A-7 to move into the middle of the standings.
“It was the best we’ve hit all year,” Gators manager Mike Underwood said. “We came out strong, and when you’ve got a big lead it is a lot better. A few games we’ve been starting down five-nothing or six-nothing and pressuring ourselves. We have a lot of young kids, so they’re learning. Other than Trinity Christian, who hits the ball hard, the rest of this whole district is a dogfight to see who gets what.”
With the wind blowing out on a gorgeous day for baseball, the Glades Day hitters wasted no time in taking control. The Gators batted around the order and sent 12 hitters to the plate to take a 6-0 lead in the top of the first inning.
The first three batters all reached base to get it started. Lorenzo Powe walked, Wilson Loman singled to right field and Eduardo Gutierrez got the scoring going by connecting on a shot to left field with runners in motion, leading to a successful RBI on the hit-and-run. Two batters later, Lyn Castaneda laced a single into the outfield to drive in two more, while also coming around to score standing up on a fielding error.
Glades Day added two more to close the frame, and another pair in the second. Starter Alex Brewster reached on an error and later came in on a balk and Lorenzo Powe drove in Lane Collins in the first. Juan Hernandez got into the action with a single in the second, advanced when Castaneda reached on an error and scored thanks to an RBI single from Brewster. Dante Marquez then pushed another run across on a fielder’s choice RBI.
The Gators added three more in the third. Marquez had an RBI walk and Hernandez and George Viera both supplied RBI singles.
That was more than enough offense for Brewster, who went the distance for the complete-game victory. The senior allowed one unearned run on a hit and a walk, and also hit two batters. He struck out three.
Boca Christian (1-6, 1-3) broke up the shutout with its only run in the fourth. Jake Shiver rolled a single through the left side of the defense to end the no-hit bid, and stole a pair of bases to then come home thanks to a sacrifice flyout from Jordan Garcia.
