Centennial Splits Doubleheader In Sunshine Classic Tourney
Centennial split a day-night doubleheader Tuesday in the Hall of Fame Sunshine Classic Tournament at Pompano Municipal Park in Pompano Beach. The Eagles defeated Oak Harbor, Ohio, 6-3 in the opening game, but then fell 7-6 to Lemont, Illinois, in the nightcap.
Nick Gorby and Danilo Quezada were both 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run to lead the Eagles (6-7) to victory over the Rockets. The Eagles scored runs in each of the first three innings.
Trace Meding picked up the victory for Centennial, going five innings and allowing one run on three hits and four walks. He struck out seven before handing the ball over to Warren Lindsey and Jorge Gomez to close out the game. The duo walked none and struck out one in two combined innings of work.
After jumping out to a 4-1 lead in the third inning, the Eagles added some insurance with a run apiece from Michael Camacho and Quezada in the sixth. All six runs for the Eagles were scored by six different players. Camacho, Luke Hartley, Austin Brendlinger and Austin Hillier all collected hits, with Brenlinger and Hillier’s coming by way of a triple.
In the night-cap, Angelo Arvelo led the offensive charge with three RBIs, but the Eagles fell behind early to the Indians and were never able to climb out of that hole. Despite four runs in the fourth and two in the sixth, the Indians added an insurance run in the fifth to hold on.
Centennial watched the Indians score two runs in each of the first, third and fourth innings and quickly found themselves playing six runs behind. The Eagles began to rally in the bottom of the fourth inning. An error on a ball hit by Michael Camacho allowed him to reach base and loaded the bases with two outs. Four-straight walks scored Joey Espinosa, Nathan Hinkley, Jorge Gomez and Camacho to close to within two runs of the Indians.
In the sixth inning the Eagles pulled to within a run with a two-RBI double to center from Angelo Arvelo. The double scored Jordan Rowe and Eddie Shepherd to close out the runs on the night.
