Late Game Fireworks Propel Vero Beach Over Port St. Lucie

Having won six of their last seven games entering play on Wendesday, the Vero Beach Indians have been red hot as the postseason rapidly approaches. Wendesday’s game against the competitive Port St. Lucie Jaguars, though, would not be easy. The Jaguars had the lead against one of the state’s best teams, however, a two-run rally in the top of the seventh and an additional run in the top of the ninth allowed the Indians to come away with a road win over the Jaguars on Tuesday night.

Though he did not start, reliever Hunter Patteson turned in one of the team’s most important performances thus far as he pitched 2.1 scoreless innings en route to securing the win. Striking out three across his 37 pitches, Patteson allowed only one hit and made sure that the Indians would not walk away with their third loss of the season. David Leuthje started for the Indians and pitched 5.2 innings of five strikeout ball before turning the ball over to the bullpen.

After only scoring in the fourth inning, the Indians came out firing in the top of the seventh as they drew two walks and recorded a single to load the bases with one out. On an 0-1 pitch, Drake Rodriguez dropped a sacrifice bunt to the that scored teammates Stevie Myers and Matt Mosel, the latter of whom scored on an error to give the Indians a 4-3 lead. With one out in the bottom of the seventh, number nine hitter Jose Barrios walked on four pitches and moved to second on a wild pitch before teammate Troy Martinez doubled to tie the game.

Neither team would score in the eighth, but in the ninth, Vero Beach broke the tie. On a 1-1 pitch with one out, Rodriguez doubled to left field and scored moments later when teammate Kyle Stenger drove a first pitch for a double to re-take the lead. Patteson then recorded two of his three strike outs in the bottom of the inning to lock things down and secure his team’s sixth straight victory.
