Dwyer’s Rendon, Ahearn Combine To No-Hit South Fork
Colton Rendon and Tyler Ahearn teamed up on a no-hitter Wednesday, leading Dwyer to a 5-0 win over South Fork in a 7A regional quarterfinal.
Rendon pitched six innings, striking out three and walking two, and Ahearn closed it out, striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh to punctuate the win, which puts the Panthers (19-9) in a regional semifinal Tuesday against Martin County (17-9). The Tigers beat West Boca 9-1 to advance in their quarterfinal playoff.
Dwyer took an early lead by plating three in the top of the first. After a flyout to lead off the inning, Danny Lynch, Kyle Khachadourian and Rendon had consecutive singles to load the bases. Jack Iervolino followed with a single that allowed Lynch to score, and courtesy-runner Matt Cooper scored on Charlie VonWerne’s groundout.
Quick innings with few men on for either team followed until the bottom of the fifth when Dwyer knocked in two more. Michael Siriani walked to lead off the inning and moved over to second on Myles Colangelo’s sacrifice. Lynch singled to left before Khachadourian’s line-drive double to center allowed Siriani and Lynch to score.
Rendon, who was selected for the HSBN Senior All-Star Game, is 6-3 with 64 strikeouts in 44 innings this season for the Panthers. Ahearn is 4-1 with 41 strikeouts in 31 innings.
South Fork had multiple runners on base just once. In the sixth, the Bulldogs’ Sheldon Carroll and Brendan Kudlinski walked, but a fly out ended the inning.
