Okeechobee Blasts Their Way Past Martin County
The Okeechobee Brahmans fell behind early but battled back to earn a critical district win against the Martin County Tigers on Thursday night. With a 3-1 district mark, the Brahmans now sit just a half-game back from Jensen Beach in 7A-13.
Zeke Mathews and Sean Osceola were instrumental in the Brahmans comeback. Both were 2-for-3 at the plate with a run scored, and they teamed up to break the game open in the fourth inning.
Facing a 2-0 deficit thanks to a sacrifice fly by the Tigers’ Brendan Vasques in the first and a passed ball in the second, Mathews followed a two-out walk by Baron Stuart with a line-drive double into left field. Stuart’s courtesy runner, Andre Stallworth, held up at third base on the play, but it was of little consequence as Osceola cleared the bases with a three-run bomb in the next at-bat.
Elijiah Finney added an insurance run for Okeechobee when he scored on a wild pitch in the next inning.
Ed Pfluger went yard for Martin County in the top of the seventh to bring the Tigers to within one run. A pair of two-out walks then put the tying run in scoring position for the Tigers, but Finney came on in relief for the Brahmans and recorded the final out on strikes.
