Port St. Lucie Opens Up 2016 Season With Win Over Okeechobee
The Port St. Luice Cougars came into the 2016 season with some unfinished business from last year. After being knocked off by Pembroke Pines Charter in the regional quarterfinals, the Cougars returned this season with renewed focus.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Cougars began anew in impressive fashion with a 5-0 win over Okeechobee.
Ian Claudio went 3-for-3 at the plate, with singles in the third, fifth, and sixth innings.
On the mound, Zach Taglieri and Troy Martinez held the Brahmans bats silent all afternoon. Okeechobee managed just two hits off of Martinez, who allowed no earned runs, and struck out three during his four innings of work. Taglieri pitched in with three shutout innings, striking out three and allowing one hit.
The Cougars got the scoring started in the third when Claudio hit a two-out single. Leo Horacio followed that with a single of his own, and when Ches Goodman tripled to center, the Cougars had a 2-0 lead.
They struck again in the fifth when lead-off man Robert Ocasio drew a walk, and Claudio again singled. Horacio then delivered a two-run triple, putting St. Lucie up 4-0. The Cougars tacked on one more in the sixth en route to the season opening win.
