Oxbridge Academy Serves Notice With Win Over Jensen Beach
Oxbridge Academy has been slowly building their young program over the past few years, and this may be the season that the Thunderwolves announce their arrival as a perennial power.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Thunderwolves served notice that they need to be taken seriously with a season-opening 3-0 win over Jensen Beach.
Oxbridge’s Teddy Benda took care of business both on the mound and at the plate in this one. On the bump, Benda went five strong innings, striking out seven and allowing only one hit. At the dish, Benda went 2-for-3, with a run.
While the Falcons used a pitcher by committee of Wade Walton, Chase Nugent, Shawn Blake, and Thad Blankenship, Oxbridge stuck with Benda for five, and Alex Rao for the final two innings. Rao added four strikeouts, and also gave up only one hit.
The offense on the day for the Thunderwolves came in the third inning. Jordan Bustabad worked a one-out walk, and then stole second and third. Benda was hit by a pitch, and Bustabad scored the first run of the game when Justin Rivero grounded out to short. Tarik Latchmansingh reached on an error, and Adriano Oberndorfer drove in Benda with run number two.
In the sixth, the Thunderwolves padded their lead when Alejandro Brojas led off with a base hit, moved to second on a passed ball, third on a balk, and scored on an Andrew Johnson sacrifice fly to left.
Oxbridge will try to keep the season opening win momentum today when they face Jupiter Christian. Jensen Beach will head on the road to face Dwyer Friday night.
