Benjamin Rides Four-Run First To Win Over King’s
Fresh off a third-place finish in the Santaluces Slam, Benjamin capitalized on a four-run first inning to get past 4A-6 nemesis King’s Academy with a 6-1 win on Tuesday.
Jack Keiser walked, Matt Ellmyer reached on an error and Kristofer Armstrong walked to load the bases before Paul Lanoce singled in Keiser to get things started for the Buccaneers (4-1). Zach Mazur walked, allowing Ellmyer to score before Aaron Steinhart singled to right to bring in Armstrong. Lanoce came home on T.J. McKenzie’s sacrifice fly to complete the Buc’s scoring in the first.
Ellmyer was the winning pitching, giving up just three hits, allowing one earned run and walking none while striking out three during his five innings of work.
The Buccaneers, who are reunited with the Lions in the same district for the first time since 2013 when they were 3A schools, added runs in the second and the fifth. Will Smithy scored on a wild pitch in the second, and Keiser doubled in McKenzie in the fifth.
Jake Gerardi’s RBI single scored Sam Cornelius in the fifth for the Lions (1-2), who also got hits from James Vaughan and Logan Goldenberg.
