Ten pitchers. 31 hits. 21 runs. Eight extra-base hits. The numbers were staggering Monday when Oxbridge and Saint John Paul II got together for a 4A District 6 clash that was one for the ages.
A walk-off home run from Jack Azulay in the bottom of the 11th decided this wild affair, giving the Thunderwolves an 11-10 win over the Eagles. The game was back and forth from the start, with the lead being passed around between the teams.
Down 10-8 in the bottom of the seventh, Oxbridge sent the game into extras with two runs. After Alejandro Borjas flied out to start the frame, Frankie Guelli singled to left before Andrew Johnson walked. Two batters later, Jordan Bustabad smacked a single to left, allowing Guelli to score. Drew Beno’s singled up the middle to bring home Bustabad to tie it at 10.
Saint John Paul II jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. A single by Frankie Mendez scored PJ Cimo, and Frankie Mendez then scored on an error.
The Thunderwolves (4-1, 2-1) matched the score in the bottom of the second. Justin Rivero led off with a walk and went to third on Alejandro Borjas’ double. Guelli flied out to center field, and Rivero scored on the play.
Mendez’s single to right that scored Christian Larson allowed the Eagles (2-4, 0-2) to retake the lead in the top of the third, but the wolves struck for three runs in the bottom of the inning to go ahead 5-3. Rivero hit a two-run home run that scored Tarik Latchmansingh, and Johnson singled in Borjas.
Saint John Paul came roaring back in the top of the fourth for five runs to go up 8-5. With the bases loaded, Harrison Polanin walked, allowing Andrew Garbarini to score. After the tying run came in on a wild pitch, Cimo’s line-drive double to center field scored Larson and Polanin. Mendez added a solo homer. Larson, Mendez and Polanin had two hits apiece for the Eagles.
Borjas finished 4-for-6 with two runs, and Bustabad was 4-for-5 with a run and RBI for Oxbridge. Adriano Oberndorfer, Latchmansingh and Beno collected two hits each. Alex Rao got the win in relief, pitching four innings and allowing no runs.
