Harris Tosses No-Hitter In 12-0 Win Over Jupiter Christian
Baseball is a game that enables a player to have unforgettable performances. On Tuesday night, starting pitcher Matt Harris recorded one of the toughest feats in all of baseball when he tossed a five-inning no-hitter in a 12-0 win over Jupiter Christian.
Despite his heavy influence in the outcome, the right-hander remained humble.
“It helps when your team puts up 12 runs for you,” Harris said about his no-hitter. “Defense did a great job tonight, and everyone hit the ball hard.”
Harris recorded nine strikeouts in five innings.
The Buccaneers (5-0) played great behind him. In the top of the third, Benjamin cashed in on a one-out double by D.J. Paone. Courtesy-runner Andrew Rueckert came in for Paone, then came around on an RBI single by Brian Dolan.
Benjamin got two more runners on and threatened to blow the game wide open in the third, but Eagles starting pitcher Jon Shuba shut the door by inducing an inning-ending groundout.
In the top of the fourth, the Buccaneers flexed their offensive muscle, scoring six runs on three hits. Matt Harris’ single up the middle scored A.J Alevizos and Kody Puedisili to give them a 4-0 lead. Later in the inning, Dolan collected his second hit of the game, with a sharp double off the left-field wall. Their offensive burst made the game 8-0 after four innings.
In the fifth, the Buccaneers continued to put pressure on the Eagles (3-5) by scoring four in the inning. Harris started it off by collecting his third hit of the game, while Cristian Berger tagged a ball off the right-center gap for a two-run triple. Both runners came around to score and made the game 12-0 before Harris finished his masterpiece.
For the Buccaneers, it has never been about one player, as evident on Tuesday as eight players scored and six players tallied at least one hit.
“It’s one-through-nine,” Buccaneers coach Brian Kaplan said about his offensive catalyst. “We haven’t had one guy that has been the leader or one guy that has been faulting. It has been one-through-nine. Everyone has been hitting the ball hard and handling the fastball.”
Despite the offensive surplus that favored the Buccaneers, Jupiter Christian coach Dave Loud is not going to be worried about just one game.
“It is just one day. We have a whole season ahead of us,” Coach Loud said about the result. “We can just as easily come out and play a lot closer game the next time we play them. I’m not too worried. The guys will mentally come back from this and respond. These guys will never quit. I don’t doubt that from them. They work very hard and take this game seriously.”
