PB Central’s Roberson, Morey Sign With D-1 Colleges
Scott Benedict has coached plenty of major league talent in his time.
“There have been too many to name,” the Palm Beach Central baseball coach said. “I had four first-rounders in a five year period back when I was at Wellington.”
He believes Brady Roberson will be another name to add to that list.
Roberson signed his letter-of-intent to play for the University of Florida on Tuesday, while his teammate Hunter Morey signed with Air Force.
“Brady’s a strong hitter, who can hit for power and average, and he doesn’t get overmatched by anybody. He’s really got some sock in his bat and he’s just a tough out,” Benedict said. “The University of Florida is a great place for him to play and to develop his talents and get an education as well.”
Roberson has heard of interest from several major league teams, and even been invited to some informal tryouts, but he’s intent on going to college.
“They’re not just a great baseball team, but the education there is a top notch. So if baseball doesn’t work out, I’ll have a four-year degree from a great school,” said the 5-foot-11, 190-pound infielder, who’s the third Roberson from Palm Beach Central history to sign with a Division I program.
Heading into his senior season, Roberson is out to beat his cousin Tim’s home run record of 10 blasts in a season. Roberson hit five homers last year.
“Brady’s ability on the field is something really special,” Morey said. “Not only is he a good player, but he’s a leader, people definitely follow what he does on and off the field. His strength and ability is just crazy.”
Morey knew he wanted to join the armed forces after high school, he was just waiting for the right opportunity to emerge.
So when Air Force approached him with a chance to play baseball, the decision was pretty simple.
“The Air Force is an opportunity that not many people get a chance to have, so when they approached me and said they liked me I took it to heart and took my visit up there and it was amazing,” Morey said.
Despite playing very well as a catcher the last couple seasons, Morey will be a middle infielder at Air Force and despite the senior’s 5-foot-5 height Benedict believes he will do well in college.
“He’s not tall in stature, but he’s a tremendous physical specimen. He’s got a huge heart and he’s not afraid of any challenge. He’s just a well-rounded player,” Benedict said.
Added Roberson: “[Going to Air Force] is a real high honor. As a player he’s not going to take no for an answer, he’s not going to lose.”
