Cardinal Newman Upsets St. John Paul In 4A-6 Quarterfinal

Shane Drohan pitched a complete-game gem and Cardinal Newman scored the winning run in the top of the seventh to pull off a 3-2 upset over St. John Paul II, in a 4A-6 quarterfinal on Monday. The Crusaders (7-17) will now face #1 seed American Heritage-Delray in a district semifinal on Tuesday.

“It was huge a win,” Cardinal Newman manager Pudge Poston said. “We had a bit of a down year but we stuck to our grind and shored up our defense this week. The guys came out and performed well. Shane Drohan had an absolute gem on the mound and he really kept us in the game. We really fed off of him.”

Anthony Badala singled to start the seventh, and Carlo Schiappa came in as a pinch-runner and later scored the deciding run on a wild pitch. Drohan then finished things off with a perfect 1-2-3 frame in the bottom of the seventh, and he recorded 10 strikeouts while allowing two unearned runs on four hits and a walk.

Joe Bentivegna was 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Crusaders’ offense, while Harrison Polinan and Jack Hay were both 2-for-3 to lead the Eagles.
